The Institute for Toolless Fabrication was recognized as an institute of the Aachen University of Applied Sciences in 2013. With its two locations in Aachen and Jülich and 14,000 students, almost 2,000 graduates, 10 faculties and over 80 courses of study each year, the FH Aachen is one of the largest and most important universities of applied sciences in Germany. The FH Aachen also has nine institutes and five affiliated institutes as well as four competence platforms.

In institutes are institutions of departments and central institutions that are active in the field of research and development, artistic design and/or in the field of teaching and study. They fulfil the requirements for scientific institutions according to § 29 HG in the version of the HRG of 30.11.20114 (GV.NRW p. 752). An institutes, on the other hand, are institutions outside the university that fulfil a task that cannot be performed independently by the university.
